Viet Nam’s trade turnover hits new record of US$770 billion in first eight months

VGP - Viet Nam's trade with the rest of the world increased to a record high of US$770 billion in the first eight months this year, up 28.7 percent year-on-year, the National Statistics Office reported on Thursday.

The country's trade turnover in August totalled US$109.7 billion, down 0.1 percent from the previous month but up 31.7 percent from the same period last year.

In the January-August period, export turnover stood at US$374.84 billion, an increase of 22.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Of the figure, the domestic economic sector and foreign-funded sector contributed US$74.47 billion and US$300.37 billion, respectively.

A total of 33 export product groups recorded turnover of more than US$1 billion each, together accounting for 93.6 percent of total export turnover. Seven product groups posted turnover exceeding US$10 billion each, contributing 70 percent of total exports.

Processed industrial products continued to dominate the export structure, generating US$337.99 billion, or 90.2 percent of total export turnover. They were followed by agricultural and forestry products at US$26.65 billion (7.1 percent), seafood at US$8 billion (2.1 percent), and fuels and minerals at US$2.2 billion (0.6 percent).

On the import side, Viet Nam spent US$395.3 billion on imports in the first eight months, up 35.3 percent year on year.

The domestic economic sector accounted for US$105.07 billion, up 23.7 percent and representing 26.6 percent of total import turnover while the foreign-invested sector recorded US$290.23 billion, up 40.1 percent and accounting for 73.4 percent.

Production inputs accounted for the overwhelming majority of imports, reaching US$372.04 billion, or 94.1 percent of total import turnover. Machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts accounted for 57.6 percent, while raw materials, energy and other production inputs made up 36.5 percent.

Consumer goods totaled US$23.26 billion, accounting for 5.9 percent of total imports.

The U.S. remained Viet Nam's largest export market in the first eight months of 2026, with US$122.0 billion. Meanwhile, China continued to be Viet Nam's largest goods supplier with US$161.9 billion./.
