Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang made the above statement while addressing the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand that took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 22.
He highly appreciated Malaysia's timely effort to convene the meeting, considering it an important contribution to sustaining the efforts of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as the ASEAN Chair in 2025, to support Cambodia and Thailand in seeking a long-term solution to peace, stability, and security in the region.
Viet Nam advocates Malaysia's proactive, consistent, and effective leadership in its role as the ASEAN Chair, said Dang.
The diplomat shared Viet Nam's deep concern over the situation and negative impacts on the bilateral relations and the people of Cambodia and Thailand, as well as impacts on ASEAN's unity, centrality, and credibility.
He underscored the importance of upholding the spirit of solidarity, collective action, and responsible engagement by ASEAN in matters related to regional peace and security.
Viet Nam welcomes the goodwill shown by Cambodia and Thailand, as reflected in the commitments reached, including the agreement reached on July 28, the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, and the establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), as well as new ceasefire proposals raised at the meeting, Dang said.
Viet Nam calls on both sides to exercise restraint, refrain from the use of force, fully implement the commitments already made, and resolve disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), underlined the diplomat, expressing his hope that the two sides will soon reach a ceasefire agreement.
At the meeting, Malaysia, on behalf of ASEAN Member States, issued the ASEAN Chair's Statement on the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand, noting that the two countries would resume ceasefire discussions and convene a meeting of the joint boundary commission on December 24 to discuss specific issues./.
