Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang made the above statement while addressing the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in New York, the U.S., on April 27.
Le reassured Viet Nam's support for the NPT, considering it as an important foundation in international security structure.
Countries possessing nuclear weapons must bear a special responsibility to fulfill their disarmament commitments, refrain from threatening the use of force, and promote confidence-building measures as well as greater dialogue on strategic issues, said the Deputy Foreign Minister.
She urged countries to advance complementary international mechanisms, including the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and increase accession and ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
Viet Nam underscored the importance and the right of peaceful use of nuclear energy by developing countries to foster progress through enhancing international cooperation, expanding access to technology and expertise, and ensuring sustainable financial resources.
Le highlighted Viet Nam's efforts to improve its national legal and policy framework, as reflected in the adoption of the Strategy for the development and application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes through 2035, with a vision to 2050.
The nation has stepped up scientific research and technological applications in the field of nuclear energy, focusing on healthcare, agriculture, environmental protection, and energy security, she added.
Amid increasingly complex global challenges, Viet Nam also calls on the international community to reaffirm its support for the value of the NPT by strengthening collective efforts and adopting a balanced and substantive outcome document to guide the Treaty's next review cycle.
Under Viet Nam's chairmanship, the 11th Review Conference of the NPT is taking place from April 27-May 22, featuring numerous in-depth sessions among the Treaty's member states./.
