The Committee discussed questions relating to the advancement of women, the protection of children, indigenous issues, the treatment of refugees, the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the elimination of racism and racial discrimination, and the right to self- determination.  The Committee also addresses important social development questions such as issues related to youth, family, ageing, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and international drug control.

With regard to women's advancement, most countries commented that promoting women's role and participation in all social life fields is showing signs of regression. Women are still primarily affected by today's interwoven and multi-dimensional crises.

Minister Counsellor Le Thi Minh Thoa, Deputy Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations (UN), held that women in many parts of the world are facing problems such as health, loss or reduction of income, lagging in access to knowledge, employment opportunities and integration, and becoming victims of gender-based violence.

Meanwhile, digital transformation and global economic trends, on the one hand, are both solutions and, on the other hand, pose the risk of exacerbating women's vulnerabilities, she stated.

Le underlined the need to promote international cooperation to support countries in implementing global commitments to ensure the full, equal and meaningful participation of women and girls in all areas of social life, contributing to preventing violence and discrimination, the Vietnamese representative said.

Given the context of digital transformation, she called for focusing on improving female workers' digital skills and promoting women's role in developing the digital economy.

Additionally, it is necessary to create favorable conditions for women and girls to develop their careers in science and technology and protect women's rights in the digital environment.

On the occasion, the Vietnamese diplomat highlighted achievements that Viet Nam has gained in ensuring women's rights and gender equality in policymaking, law building and development strategy designing.

Notably, Viet Nam has a high ratio of women among National Assembly deputies and leaders. Besides, the country has shown strong performance in ensuring employment for women and gender equality in the digital era.

Viet Nam will continue to cooperate with the international community in promoting gender equality and progress of women./.
