Viet Nam among world's top countries with highest 5G coverage
VGP - Viet Nam's 5G network now covers approximately 92 percent of the population, making the Southeast Asian country one of the world's fastest adopters of 5G technology, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Vietnamese telecommunications companies have successfully mastered the design, production, and commercialization of 5G equipment that meets international standards. Around 2,500 5G base stations currently use equipment researched and manufactured by Vietnamese enterprises, accounting for approximately 6 percent of the total.
Viet Nam is also playing a more active role in the development of 6G – the sixth-generation wireless communications technology.
The Ministry of Science and Technology already established a 6G Steering Committee, comprising agencies responsible for telecommunications and radio frequency management, technology enterprises, and universities to proactively advance research on 6G technology.
The committee aims to enable businesses, educational institutions, and research organisations to gain early access to 6G technology, participate in research and contribute to the development of global 6G standards, while proactively selecting deployment solutions best suited to Viet Nam's conditions.
Viet Nam took more than eight years from the standardisation of 4G technology to develop and master the production of 4G equipment. For 5G, however, this timeline was shortened to nearly two years. Building on this experience, the Southeast Asian country is expected to further reduce the time required for research and development, paving the way for the early mastery of 6G technology.
Meanwhile, the telecommunications sector has continued to maintain strong growth. Viet Nam's mobile broadband speed has reached 210.85 Mbps, ranking ninth globally, while its IPv6 adoption rate has climbed to 67 per cent, placing the country second in Southeast Asia.
Earlier, the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group announced a plan to begin trial deployment of a 6G network by 2028. Viettel is currently participating in research on 6G architecture and plans to conduct early trials of pre-commercial systems and devices by 2028, while contributing to global standard-setting efforts ahead of commercial deployment from 2029.
The group emphasised that its vision for 6G commercialisation extends beyond providing telecommunications services to include the development and commercialisation of technology products, including network equipment, software platforms, and AI-integrated smart device ecosystems developed in-house./.
