Top leader To Lam holds summit meeting with Australian Prime Minister in Canberra

Albanese warmly welcomed the top Vietnamese leader's State visit to Australia, emphasizing the importance of the visit amid the vibrant development of bilateral relations, particularly since the two countries upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024.

To, for his part, reiterated that Viet Nam attaches importance to Australia's role and position, as well as to the close and trusted Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Australia is a trusted friend and partner of Viet Nam, he said, expressing his desire to continue elevating the bilateral relations to new heights.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the strong momentum of Viet Nam-Australia relations after more than half a century of diplomatic ties, marked by solid political trust and strengthened mutual understanding and support.

They welcomed the active and effective implementation of the action program for the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for 2024-2027 period, with breakthrough results achieved across all six pillars of the bilateral ties, particularly, the two-way trade has doubled over the past five years to more than US$14 billion in 2025.

The two sides underlined the need to strengthen the political foundation by increasing all-level delegation exchanges, deepen defense and security cooperation, foster collaboration in cybersecurity, transnational crime combat, and response to non-traditional security challenges.

Regarding economic, trade and investment cooperation, they pledged to utilize the free trade agreements to which both countries are parties, remove barriers and facilitate business activities.

The two sides agreed to raise the two-way trade to US$20 billion, while further promoting supply-chain linkages, high-quality investment, and cooperation in green economy, digital economy, new energy and future industries.

Both leaders pledged to expand collaboration in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technology, biotechnology, biomedicine, marine research, critical minerals and green hydrogen.

The pair vowed to promote joint research projects and linkages among universities, research institutes and businesses, with a view to creating a Viet Nam-Australia technology connectivity ecosystem and developing a highly skilled workforce.

The two leaders agreed to enhance green and sustainable transformation and climate change adaptation, working towards the goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

The host and the guest encouraged stronger cooperation and exchanges in culture, tourism and people-to-people relations.

On regional and international issues, they stressed the necessity to step  up coordination at multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations (UN), ASEAN and ASEAN-led mechanisms.

Both sides agreed to promote dialogue and confidence-building, respect for international law and the UN Charter, ensure security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight, and settle disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Vietnamese side affirmed its readiness to work with Australia to strengthen engagement with Southeast Asia, uphold ASEAN centrality, and contribute to a peaceful, stable, sustainable and inclusive region./.
