WEF 2023: Viet Nam shares experience in ensuring food security

VGP - Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha delivered remarks at important sessions on food and the relations between food-energy-water resource as part of his activities at the 53rd World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland on January 17 (local time).

Energy transition in parallel with food transformation

At a discussion of the Food Action Alliance, the Deputy Prime Minister shared Viet Nam’s experience in ensuring food security and agricultural development, saying the country has attached special importance to agriculture, considering it an economic spearhead.

The Party and the State of Viet Nam have implemented sound policies on agriculture and rural development, he said.

In Viet Nam, farmers, scientists, businesses and the State have been linked together and attention paid to international cooperation, notably the tripartite collaboration with the European Union (EU) and Africa, he added.

Regarding food transformation, he highlighted opportunities in energy transition in parallel with food transformation, and the establishment of mechanisms in support of farmers.

Tran called for beefing up tripartite cooperation in agriculture between Viet Nam, African countries and such development partners like the European Union as well as collaboration in building regional innovative centers on food and foodstuff systems in Viet Nam.

In a keynote speech at another discussion on the Interplay of Food, Energy and Water, Tran stressed that issues regarding food, energy and water resources require a comprehensive and systematic approach.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of green transition, and circular, low-carbon economy to address the interplay of food, energy and water resources, he said, emphasizing that the matters of ecosystem, food, energy and water resources should go with climate change response.

Ha took the occasion to share Viet Nam’s experience in ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural development.

Viet Nam seeks support to shift to a green economy

The same day, at a meeting with World Bank (WB) Managing Director of Operations Axel van Trotsenburg, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha appreciated the WB's contributions to Viet Nam's socio-economic growth, particularly its support of response to climate change and development of the Mekong Delta. 

Tran spoke highly of Viet Nam's determination for shifting to the green, circular and low carbon economic growth model.

He took the occasion to call on the international lender to support Viet Nam in terms of green investment capital, green finance, green technology, and policy recommendations.

The Deputy Prime Minister suggested the bank set up a mechanism for experience exchange among nations, saying that Viet Nam is willing to share its lessons in how to effective use loán for reducing poverty, changing the country's position from low-income to middle-income, and making fundamental changes in education and health.

In reply, van Trotsenburg praised the close relations between the WB and Viet Namm affirming the WB stands ready to assist Viet Nam in realizing its goals of becoming an upper middle-income country, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and shifting to a green, circular economy, among others.

Viet Nam prioritizes green and sustainable finance development

The Vietnamese Government always encourages the engagement of foreign businesses with financial capacity, experience, support capacity, and administration expertise, in enhancing the operational efficiency and safety of Vietnamese credit organizations, said Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha while receiving Group Chairman of Standard Chartered Jose Vinals in Davos, Switzerland on January 17.

Viet Nam is giving a priority to and encourage the development of green and sustainable finance, especially green bond market, he added.

In reply, Vinals said that Standard Chartered stands ready to help Viet Nam, provide technical advice, and continue to coordinate the implementation of projects under the Just Energy Transition Partnership./.
