Deputy PM puts forward measures to ensure global food security at WEF
VGP - Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai put forwards ways to ensure global food security in his opening remarks at the key session on "Averting a global food crisis" of the 52nd World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (WEF 52) in Davos, Switzerland on May 23.
The event drew the participation of more than 2,500 delegates who are leaders from countries, international organizations and the business giants from around the world.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Le highlighted the dual impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tension which have caused unprecedented consequences on supply, price and global food supply chain.
He stressed the need to have a holistic and multi-targeted approach towards a resilient, inclusive and sustainable global food system.
It is necessary to provide humanitarian assistance to countries with food shortages, restore supply chains and curb the pressure of increasing prices of agricultural products. In the long-term, it is vital to build a green, clean, inclusive and sustainable agriculture, underscored Le.
The Deputy PM called for strengthening international cooperation and multilateralism and promoting the role of international organizations to settle problems related to global food security.
Le called for ensuring transition to equitable food production and taking into account the interests of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.
He underlined the need to build an agro-ecosystem with the participation and coordination of all related sides and create a new driving force to promote the development of agriculture and food production.
Viet Nam targets to build a low-carbon, green, ecological and sustainable agriculture, concentrating on three pillars of ecological agriculture, modern countryside and smart farmers, he stated.
He call for international cooperation in consolidating climate change resilience and response for the Mekong Delta, making contributions to consolidating the regional and national foods security.
* On the sideline of the WEF 52, Deputy PM Le Minh Khai had meetings with President Pro Tempore of the U.S. Senate Patrick Leahy and Head of Commercial Banking, South & Southeast Asia, HSBC, Amanda Murphy and held a working session with leaders from world's large corporations.
