Vietnamese rice ST25 named world's best rice 2023
VGP - The ST25 fragrant rice variety of Viet Nam has won the World's Best Rice 2023 award, recently held in the Philippines, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said Thursday.
This is the second time the ST25 rice variety has seized the award. This year's competition saw the participation of more than ten countries with 30 rice samples. The second prize went to Cambodian rice, while the third-place award went to Indian rice.
ST25 (Gao Ong Cua in Vietnamese) rice results from 20 years of research by the Hero of Labor, Ho Quang Cua.
ST25 variety is the latest generation of the famous fragrant rice line with many qualities considered "premium". From seed selection to planting, all comply with the strict principles of the organic rice production process.
According to Mr. Ho Quang Cua, after winning the best rice award in 2019, with the 68-10 line, he and his colleagues continued to select by pure planting each rice. By 2021, line 72-6 was discovered.
There is no outstanding shape because the 72-6 rice plants are low and slightly slanted, but they are less likely to fall and bloom 5 days earlier than the 68-10 line. Rice grains are about 0.2mm shorter than the old line. This rice line also has a better rice recovery rate than the 68-10 line by about 0.5 percent.
Rice Trader held the annual "World's Best Rice" competition for the first time in 2009. Vietnamese rice won the highest prize for the first time in 2019. Last year, Cambodian rice received the highest prize in Thailand, while Vietnamese, Thai, and Lao rice varieties were named in the top four./.
