Last week in New York, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang led a delegation of senior staff from Viet Nam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations on a visit to the UN Archives.
The delegation explored original materials tracing the UN's founding and Viet Nam's engagement with the organization.
The visit was part of activities marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the 80th National Day of Viet Nam, and the 48th anniversary of Viet Nam–UN diplomatic relations.
UN experts provided an overview of the organization's development and highlighted landmark moments in Viet Nam–UN cooperation, including diplomatic efforts prior to Viet Nam's admission.
The exhibition showcased a collection of original documents—government correspondence from both the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, as well as UN resolutions and reports supporting Viet Nam's national liberation efforts.
Noteworthy items included letters from President Ho Chi Minh to UN officials in 1945, Prime Minister Pham Van Dong's formal application for UN membership dated August 10, 1976, and key resolutions such as UN Security Council Resolution 413 and General Assembly Resolution A/RES/32/2, which officially welcomed Viet Nam as the 149th UN member on September 20, 1977.
Also presented were materials documenting Viet Nam's efforts to overcome embargoes and its increasing contributions to international peace and dialogue, supported by UN initiatives.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang emphasized that these valuable archives preserve historical truths and reflect Viet Nam's determined journey to become a responsible and equal member of the global community.
Over the past 48 years, cooperation with the UN has helped protect Viet Nam's national interests, sustain peace and security, and enhance its international standing. The partnership has deepened Viet Nam's engagement with other UN member states.
Ambassador Giang reaffirmed Viet Nam's commitment to multilateralism and the UN Charter. He pledged Viet Nam would continue making substantive contributions to global governance and shared challenges facing humanity./.
