Gov't approves project to develop STEM workforce for high-tech development

VGP - Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long signed Decision approving a project on training human resources in favor of high-tech development for the 2025–2035 period with a vision towards 2045.

The project aims to prepare a workforce in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with high levels of expertise and technical proficiency to meet the demands of expanding investment in high-tech sectors.

It focuses on developing a talented workforce capable of deeply engaging in research and development of strategic and prioritized high technologies.

The project also targets to attract investment from major global tech giants, contributing to economic restructuring and sustainable development of the country in a new era driven by science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, and green transition.

By 2030, the proportion of students enrolled in STEM fields is expected to reach 35 percent at each level of education, with at least 2.5 percent in fundamental sciences and 18 percent in fields related to digital technology.

The number of graduates from information and communications technology (ICT) training programs is expected to reach 80,000 per year by 2030 and 100,000 per year in the 2030-2035 period, with at least 10 percent holding degrees at the engineer, master's, or doctoral level by 2030 and 15 percent in the 2030-2050 phase.

The number of graduates from specialized training programs in artificial intelligence (AI) is projected to reach 8,000 per year by 2030 and 15,000 per year in the 2030-2035 period, with at least 20 percent earning degrees at the engineer, master's, or doctoral level.

Additionally, by 2030, all of bachelor's, engineering, and master's programs in STEM fields will be integrated with knowledge and skills in data analysis and AI.

By 2045, a highly skilled and high-quality STEM workforce will become a core competitive advantage for Viet Nam in attracting investment in high-tech sectors, particularly in strategic technologies.
