Viet Nam place third at 11th Para Games

VGP — Viet Nam successfully finished at third place at the 11th ASEAN Para Games after the last day of competition on August 5 in Surakarta, Indonesia.

Swimmer Trinh Thi Bich Nhu celebrates her win in the women's S6 100m freestyle with a Games record time of 1min 49.22sec.

They won 65 golds, 59 silvers and 54 bronzes. The result was much better than a target of 40 gold medals set before they took part in the Games.

The third place was one step up compared to their fourth position in the previous Games in Malaysia in 2017.

Indonesia finished on top position with 171 golds, followed by Thailand who claimed 113 titles.

The final day saw Vietnamese outstanding performance, winning in three swimming categories.

Trinh Thi Bich Nhu continued her peak performance in the pool. She finished first in the women's S6 100m freestyle with a time of 1min 49.22sec, setting a new Games record.

Riyanti Riyanti and Siti Alfiah, both of the hosts came second and third, respectively.

The men's 4x50m freestyle relay also won and set a new height with a time of 2:40.89.

Earlier, Nguyen Manh Phu dominated the men's S4 100m freestyle, timing 1:49.22.

Meanwhile Le Thi Dung pocketed her third gold medal of the tournament in the women's S8 50m freestyle event. Dung completed her race after 36.71sec, just 0.02sec faster than Malaysian Carmen Lim.

The swimmers lured a total of 27 golds, 20 silvers and 12 bronzes, double their target of 13 golds. They also set 12 new records.

The other gold went to team Dao Thi Le Xuan, Tran Ngoc Loan and Pham Thi Huong in the women's B1 category.

In summary, the chess team bagged 13 golds, six silvers and 11 bronzes. It was four times better than what they had expected prior to their leave for Indonesia.

In track-and-field, the men's 4x100m T11-13 brought home a bronze medal which was also the last medal of the athletic team.

In overall, they secured 15 golds, 22 silvers and 14 bronzes.

Powerlifters wrapped up their competitions with 10 golds, eight silvers and three bronzes

Table tennis team ended with one silver and 10 bronzes. The badminton pocketed three bronzes while the judo fighters made 2 silvers and one bronze.

The archery with only one representative went home empty-handed./.
