Swimmers shine brilliantly at Para Games

VGP — Vietnamese swimmers grabbed 12 gold medals and set up six records at the 11th ASEAN Para Games on August 4 in Surakarta, Indonesia.

Defending champion Vi Thi Hang was the most outstanding athlete of the team.

She won and made up two new heights in the women's S7 50m freestyle on 36.97sec and SB6 100m breaststroke on 1min 51.77.

Hang who triumphed in the S7 100m freestyle event four days ago met no worthy rivals in the pool. She took the lead from the beginning and created big gap with all other swimmers and went solo to the finish lines.

Famed athlete Vo Huynh Anh Khoa added another gold in his pocket in the men's S8 50m butterfly event. His time of 30.47sec was a new Games record.

Cambodian Muoy Yun and Vietnamese Le Tho Giang came second and third, respectively.

Trinh Thi Bich Nhu won and set new bar in the women's S5 50m butterfly on 42.50sec. She later topped the podium of the 50m freestyle.

She was followed by Beariza Roble of the Philippines.

Do Thanh Hai triumphed the men's SB5 100m breaststroke setting a new record of 1:34.12.

He also won the 200m medley event some hours later.

The last record went to the 4x50m medley relay team which finished first 2:44.50.

Other gold medalists were Danh Hoa in the men's S4 50m freestyle; Le Tien Dat in the men's S6 50m freestyle and Nguyen Hoang Nha in the men's S7 50m freestyle.

After four days, the Vietnamese swimmers has won 23 golds, 19 silvers and eight bronzes, and set nine records, temporally standing on top of swimming medal tally. They have exceeded their target of 13 golds.

Chess masters set their dominate at the Games with 10 golds in standard and rapid chess events

Chess was another strong point of Viet Nam in every international sport meet.

On August 4, Vietnamese masters secured six gold medals to stay stably on top of the ranking table.

Nguyen Thi My Linh bagged a gold in the women's B2-B3 individual rapid chess. Linh and teammates Nguyen Thi Hong and Nguyen Thi Minh Thu won the team event.

Doan Thu Huyen also earned both individual and team title in the women's PI rapid chess. Her teammates in the team event were Nguyen Thi\ Kieu and Tran Thi Bich Thuy.

Thuy on August 2 topped the women's PI individual and team standard chess events.

Dao Tuan Kiet brought home gold in the men's B1 individual rapid chess. He was grouped with Le Van Viet and Dinh Tuan Son which won the team event.

Masters will continue with blitz chess events.

Nguyen Thi Hai successfully defended all three titles in shot put, discus throw and javelin throw events.

In the track-and-field event at the Manahan Stadium, Paralympian Nguyen Thi Hai completed her title hat-trick after winning the women's F57 javelin throw with a result of 24.69m.

Earlier, she won the shot put and discus throw events.

The athletic team also pocketed two silvers and four bronzes in other categories.

By the end of August 4, Viet Nam has grabbed 50 golds, 44 silvers and 30 bronzes.

Athletes' outstanding performance helped the team complete their target of 40 titles.

Currently, host Indonesia still on top with 111 golds, followed by Thailand and Viet Nam, respectively./,
