The 92nd annual SPS Committee meeting took place on June 18 at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Participants at the meeting include representatives from 166 WTO member countries. Viet Nam's delegation was led by Dr. Ngo Xuan Nam of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
During the thematic session, the participants discussed ways to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) risks through SPS measures in international trade.
The session followed recommendations from the SPS Agreement review report and contributed to ongoing discussions to implement the SPS Agreement amid emerging challenges and opportunities, building on the SPS MC12 Work Program Declaration.
In the formal session, members examined a WTO Secretariat report (G/C/W/859) on notifications in the goods sector, focusing on improving the quality and timeliness of notifications. They also discussed 59 specific trade concerns, including four new ones.
On the sidelines, the Vietnamese delegation held bilateral meetings with WTO members.
The team met with the Chinese delegation in Geneva and the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) to review the CIFER system under Decree 248, aiming to ensure uninterrupted exports of Vietnamese agri-food products and smooth customs clearance.
They also met with the Japanese delegation, requesting SPS guidance for exporting beef-flavored instant noodles from Viet Nam to Japan.
In addition, bilateral meetings were held with U.S. and UK representatives to clarify points related to the draft amendment of Section II, Part 1, Appendix XII of Circular No. 25/2016/TT-BNNPTNT on quarantine for terrestrial animals and animal products./.
