UN Human Rights Council adopts Viet Nam-initiated resolutions
VGP - The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on April 3 adopted two resolutions proposed and drafted by Viet Nam.
One of them is a Resolution on the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the other on the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action (VDPA).
Earlier, at the high-level segment of the 52nd session of the UNHRC held on February 27, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang proposed initiatives on celebrating the 75th anniversary of the UDHR and the 30th anniversary of the VDPA.
The initiatives aim to reaffirm and strengthen efforts and actions towards big and inclusive goals and values of these documents as well as common commitments of the international community on human rights.
These resolutions have reflected the status, role and effective operation of the UNHRC and other UN human rights mechanisms, highlighted the role of nations in ensuring human rights, acknowledged the participation of women and the role of international cooperation and solidarity and respected diversity and inclusiveness.
The resolutions, which are regarded as remarkable highlights in the first session of Viet Nam's three-year term on the UNHRC, have manifested substantive and responsible contributions of the nation to common work of the UNHRC.
The UDHR is a milestone document in the history of human rights. The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948 as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
The VDPA was adopted on June 25, 1993 by consensus by the representatives of the 171 States attending the World Conference. The Declaration also marked the beginning of a renewed effort to strengthen and further implement the body of human rights instruments that had been painstakingly constructed on the foundation of the UDHR since 1948./.
