VGP - The Government has instructed residents in 25 northern provinces should stay indoors to protect themselves from devastating impacts of superstorm Yagi.

These localities are: Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Hoa Binh, Son La, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Ha Noi, Hung Yen, Ha Nam, and Vinh Phuc.

Earlier, 12 northern localities decided to close schools for fear of the superstorm.

To minimize the possible damage, all coastal localities from Quang Ninh to Nghe An have issued sea bans.

Four airports in northern Viet Nam, Noi Bai in Ha Noi, Van Don in Quang Ninh, Cat Bi in Hai Phong and Tho Xuan in Thanh Hoa will suspend services during certain hours on Saturday, resulting in the cancellation of around 310 domestic and international flights.

On Friday night, Yagi entered the Gulf of Tonkin with wind speeds of level 14 and gusts reaching level 17.

At 7 a.m. on September 7, the storm's eye was about 150km east-southeast of Quang Ninh province, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

The superstorm is moving west-northwest at the speed of 15-20km per hour and expected to reach northeastern provinces at 7 p.m. on September 7.

Yagi has caused heavy rains and strong winds in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong from Saturday morning.

From the morning of September 7-9, the northern region and Thanh Hoa province are expected to experience heavy rain of 100-350mm.

Strong wind and thunderstorm are anticipated in the northwestern region and provinces from Nghe An To Thua Thien Hue./.
