Four airports to be closed as superstorm Yagi approaches northern coast
VGP - Viet Nam will temporarily halt flight operations at four airports in the north on September 7 as superstorm Yagi is approaching northern coast, the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV) said Thursday.
CAAV Director Dinh Viet Thang said that the four airports are Noi Bai in Ha Noi, Van Don in Quang Ninh, Cat Bi in Hai Phong and Tho Xuan in Thanh Hoa.
Specifically, Noi Bai international airport will suspend flight operation from 10am to 7pm on September 7.
Van Don international airport will halt services from 4am to 4pm on September 7.
Cat Bi airport will stop operation from 5am to 4pm on September 7.
Tho Xuan airport will suspend aircraft operations from 12pm to 10pm on September 7.
The aviation authority also instructed the Viet Nam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) to provide appropriate aviation notifications in accordance with current regulations and ensure absolute safety of flight operations.
The CAAV Director suggested airlines should consider additional flights starting from September 8 to ensure they can meet passenger travel demands following the typhoon.
Besides the four airports, Vinh airport in the central province of Nghe An province and Dien Bien airport in the northern province of Dien Bien will also be impacted by Yagi but to a lesser extent. They are advised to stay ready to respond to any unusual developments of the superstom.
Yagi is a powerful typhoon that could affect approximately 240 domestic flights and 70 international flights, and airport closures are necessary for safety reasons, said Dinh./.
