Ambassador Helga Margarete made the above statement during an interview with VGP on the threshold of the Lunar New Year 2025 in Viet Nam.
What are your strongest impressions of Viet Nam in 2024?
Ambassador Helga Margarete: Since my arrival in July 2024, I have been profoundly impressed by Viet Nam's rapid development and vibrant culture. The warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people stand out, as does the country's rich history and commitment to sustainability.
I look forward to strengthening the ties between Germany and Viet Nam, particularly in areas such as trade, education, and environmental protection.
In 2025, Viet Nam and Germany will mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (September 23, 1975-September 23, 2025).
Germany remains the biggest trade partner of Viet Nam in Europe. The two-way trade turnover hit over US$11 billion in 2023 and over US$8 billion in the first eight months of 2024. What are your expectations for Viet Nam's development prospects and the Viet Nam-Germany bilateral relationship in 2025?
Ambassador Helga Margarete: As the largest economy in Europe, Germany has long been recognized for its technological prowess and high-quality manufacturing. Viet Nam, on the other hand, is one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, with a burgeoning middle class and a youthful workforce. This unique combination positions both countries for a robust trade and investment relationship.
In 2025, it is anticipated that trade between Germany and Viet Nam will continue to flourish, driven by several factors.
The implementation of the European Union Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which came into effect in August 2020, has already reduced tariffs on a wide range of goods and services.
This agreement has paved the way for greater market access and mutual investment opportunities, fostering a business environment conducive to growth.
The sectors expected to witness significant growth include renewable energy, manufacturing, and technology.
Germany's commitment to transitioning to renewable energy aligns perfectly with Viet Nam's goals of sustainable development.
As Viet Nam seeks to reduce its carbon footprint and increase its reliance on renewable sources, German companies specializing in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can play a crucial role in this transformation.
Moreover, Viet Nam's tech ecosystem presents an attractive opportunity for German investors.
Could you please inform outstanding activities of your embassy to celebrate the anniversary?
Ambassador Helga Margarete: As we enter 2025, Germany and Viet Nam stand on the threshold of celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, a milestone that highlights the evolution of a partnership marked by mutual respect, cooperation, and shared aspirations.
Established on September 23, 1975, this relationship has grown from initial diplomatic recognition into a robust strategic partnership that encompasses diverse fields such as foreign policy, trade, investment, human rights, science and education, and cultural exchange.
We are excited to celebrate this significant anniversary with a series of events throughout the year.
The activities planned throughout the year target a broad audience, especially teenagers and young adults, through innovation fairs, career days, concerts, sporting events, art exhibitions, film festivals, literature days and an exhibition of Vietnamese-German biographies, to name just a few.
Highlights of the anniversary year will include two concerts by the German singer Katharine Mehrling, a concert by the German musician Thomas Anders (Modern Talking) as well as Germany festivals in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.
A "German career truck" will travel to selected locations in different provinces and provide information about career and training opportunities in Germany. Cultural events, such as concerts and competitions are currently being organized to make Germany come alive through this nationwide program. Details will be made public under the URL www.50VietDuc.de after Tet and continuously updated throughout the year.
As the Lunar New Year Festival is approaching. How do you feel about the most important festival in Viet Nam? I consider the Lunar New Year Festival, or Tet, to be incredibly significant. It truly embodies the rich traditions and values of Viet Nam.
Ambassador Helga Margarete: Tet is a time for family unity, reflection, and expressing gratitude when people honor their ancestors. The festive atmosphere, with its vibrant decorations, traditional foods, and various customs beautifully showcases Viet Nam's cultural heritage.
Moreover, Tet plays a crucial role in fostering goodwill and strengthening community ties, making it a meaningful time not just for the Vietnamese people, but also for anyone interested in understanding this wonderful culture.
Thank you so much!
