Typhoon Yagi claims 22 lives in Viet Nam

VGP - Typhoon Yagi has killed 22 people and injured 199 others while 32 people are still missing, the National Committee for Disaster Response and Search and Rescue reported Sunday evening.

The casualties include five in Lao Cai province, four in Hoa Binh, three in Quang Ninh, three in Ha Noi, two in Lang Son, two in Hai Phong, one in Yen Bai, one in Hai Duong and one in Military Region 3.

The missing persons include 28 in Quang Ninh and the rest are residents from Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai and Son La.

Quang Ninh had the highest number of injured victims, followed by Hai Phong with 18, Ha Noi with eight, Hai Duong five, Lang Son four, Bac Giang four, Phu Tho two and Hoa Binh one.

Besides the catastrophic loss of life, the storm has caused significant property damage. Up to 38 ships in Quang Ninh were sank; 4,350 houses were damaged. Up to 52,371 hectares of crops were flooded. Meanwhile, 24,341 trees were uprooted. Nearly 500 electricity poles were broken.

After more than 15 hours in Viet Nam, Yagi weakened to a tropical depression in the Northwest region, though it continues to bring heavy rains and flooding.

The meteorological agency warned of continued "risk of flash floods" in riverside areas.

Authorities in the northern mountainous resort city of Sa Pa suspended all sightseeing and tourism activities starting Sunday due to heavy rains and landslides caused by typhoon Yagi./.
