South Korea hands over US$2 million in aid to help Viet Nam overcome Yagi consequences

On behalf of the South Korean Government, Korean Ambassador to Viet Nam Choi Youngsam handed over the funding to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep at a ceremony on Wednesday.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Choi expressed his deep condolences to Vietnamese people over the losses caused by typhoon, the strongest storm hitting Viet Nam’s mainland over the last seven decades.

The funding was quickly decided by the Korean Government as South Korea is a comprehensive strategic partner and a sincere friend of Viet Nam, said Ambassador Choi.

It will be used to finance the reconstructin of houses, roads, medical establishments and schools in the most affected localities like Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh.

Choi also said many Korean investors in Viet Nam are actively making contributions to help Viet Nam overcome the devastating consequences of the typhoon.

As of September 17, the typhoon left 329 people dead and missing and 1,929 others injured, according to preliminary reports.

Nearly 235,000 houses and 1,500 schools were destroyed and damaged and more than 307,000 ha of rice and fruits were inundated.

About 3,722 aquaculture cages were damaged or swept away and nearly three million livestock and poultry were perished. Approximately 310,000 trees were uprooted.

Total Yagi-induced damages are estimated at around VND50 trillion, or more than US$2 billion, according to the Government of Viet Nam./.
