Prime Minister attends ASEAN Summit Plus One with China, RoK, UN

VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Friday attended ASEAN Summits with partners namely China, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and the United Nations (UN) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia within the frameworks of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.

*At the 25th ASEAN-China Summit, Pham reiterated that Viet Nam and ASEAN Member States attach importance to the relationship with China, a top partner of the bloc.

He suggested both sides bolster trade and investment, open the economy, facilitate customs clearance for goods and maintain the stability of supply and production chains via diversifying freight transport modes by rail, road, and air transports, and accelerate sustainable and balanced trade.

The Vietnamese leader recommended China continue expanding imports of goods and farm products from Viet Nam and from ASEAN nations via Viet Nam.

ASEAN and China need to join hands in ensuring economic recovery towards sustainable development, including enhancing collaboration in green development, environmental protection, improvement of the diversification and sustainability of ecosystem and climate change adaption, he noted.

On the occasion, leaders from ASEAN and China adopted the Statement commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), reaffirming the significance of the DOC to peace, security and stability in the East Sea.

The Joint Statement on enhancing common and sustainable development, and the Joint Statement on cooperation in food security was also approved at the event.

*At the 23rd ASEAN-RoK Summit, Prime Minister Pham spoke highly of the strong and comprehensive development in the ASEAN-RoK Strategic Partnership, voicing his support the RoK to implement the policy to promote extensive cooperation with ASEAN.

The Vietnamese Government chief stressed the importance of restoring cooperation activities for the sake of peoples, focusing on health care, people-to-people exchanges, tourism, human resource development, digital transformation, climate change response and green growth.

He proposed ASEAN and the RoK should further facilitate market access for their enterprises and pave the way for exporting farm products and fruits from ASEAN to the RoK.

Pham called for facilitating businesses from ASEAN to take part in the global and regional supply chains of the Korean enterprises and fostering the Mekong sub-region cooperation via the Mekong-RoK partnership framework.

Both sides should endorse close coordination and dialogues, build trust and make responsible contributions to addressing regional security challenges such as the East Sea and Korean Peninsula issues, he asserted.

Pham took the occasion to express thanks to the RoK and other ASEAN countries for supporting the initiative of Viet Nam on the organization of the "RoK Day in ASEAN" in 2023 in Viet Nam with a view to deepening the bilateral cooperation towards the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-RoK relations by 2024.

*At the 12th ASEAN-UN Summit, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of ASEAN-UN relationship, regarding it as a model for cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, contributing to peace and security in the world.

ASEAN and the UN should strengthen close coordination to boost peace values, increase dialogues, cooperation, trust building and respect of law, enhance efforts in socio-economic recovery and development and handle global and regional challenges towards green and sustainable development, emphasized Pham.

It is necessary to ensure the balance and harmony between economic development and culture-society development, narrow development gap and develop sub-regions, including the Mekong sub-region, inclusive growth and equitable development, added the Vietnamese leader.

He suggested the UN support Viet Nam to get access to financial resources and technologies and assist the country in human resource training, national governance and technical expertise to effectively and responsibly translate climate commitments into reality and guarantee just energy transition. 

On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-UN relations and the 45th anniversary of Viet Nam's accession to the UN, Pham underlined that the nation will continue making active and responsible contributions to the common works of the UN and doubling effort to fulfill its tasks as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 tenure./.
