The UN General Assembly resolution emphasized that the Lunar New Year is a holiday in many member countries, encouraging UN agencies not to hold meetings on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
The fact that the UN General Assembly passed the above resolution right before the New Year of Wood Dragon 2024 is meaningful for countries that officially celebrate the Lunar New Year.
Besides, this is good news for nearly 2 billion people worldwide who consider the Lunar New Year the most important holiday.
This shows the international community's recognition of traditional Asian culture. At the same time, this is the result of coordinated advocacy at the UN, in which Viet Nam is among 12 countries that participated in the joint letter sent to United Nations leaders in August 2023 and actively promoted this.
Previously, on August 10, 2023, the Ambassador, Head of Delegation of 12 countries to the UN (including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam) sent a joint letter.
The letter requesting the Chairman of the Conference Committee to include the Lunar New Year in the annual UN calendar to demonstrate the commitment of the most significant multilateral organization on the planet to diversity and inclusion as well as the cultural significance of the occasion this meaningful ceremony.
