Prime Minister attends 14th ASEAN-UN Summit
VGP - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the 14th ASEAN-UN Summit, in Vientiane, Laos, on October 11-the final day of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.
In his remarks, the Vietnamese leader called for strengthened coordination between ASEAN and the EU in addressing global challenges, contributing positively to green and sustainable development.
He expressed thanks for the UN's quick response to help ASEAN countries in Typhoon Yagi relief efforts, hoping that the UN will continue support for ASEAN, particularly Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) nations, to boost their capacity regarding natural disasters resilience, climate change response, and just energy transition.
ASEAN and the UN should continue to cooperate effectively and positively contribute to collective efforts to ensure peace, security, and stability in the world and the Southeast Asian region, he proposed.
He expressed his hope that the UN will make more contribution to maintaining peace, stability, security, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea.
Pham expected that the UN will advocate ASEAN's common stance on the East Sea issue, peacefully resolve disputes, and make efforts to promptly achieve a substantive and effective Code of Conduct (COC) in line with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), with a view to turning the East Sea into a region of peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development.
He spoke highly of the UN and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for efforts to resolve conflicts worldwide, including in the Middle East.
The Vietnamese leader voiced concern over criticisms aimed at hindering the Secretary-General's mediation efforts and affirmed Viet Nam's support for the UN call to end violence, provide humanitarian aid to affected populations, and promote peaceful negotiations in line with international law and UN resolutions.
At the meeting, ASEAN and the UN stressed the significance of their comprehensive partnership and the implementation of their 2021-2025 action plan, which has so far achieved a 90 percent rate.
Both sides agreed to develop a new action plan for 2026-2030 and to align ASEAN's 2025 Community Vision with the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Prime Minister Pham and his entourage concluded their four-day working trip to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings in Vientiane, Laos.
Through around 60 multilateral and bilateral activities, the Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Pham, delivered crucial messages about ASEAN and its future and affirmed Viet Nam's role and position in the bloc./.
