Phu Quoc has all it takes to attract American tourists, says U.S. Ambassador
VGP - Phu Quoc possesses all the elements needed to appeal to American travelers, from pristine beaches and diverse cuisine to high-quality sports and resort experiences, U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam Marc Knapper said.

Speaking on the growing role of tourism in the Viet Nam–U.S. relations, Ambassador Knapper said that since the normalization of ties in 1995, bilateral relations have expanded from a modest starting point into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership covering trade, investment, education, science and technology, as well as security and defense.
At the heart of this progress, he emphasized, lies mutual understanding and trust—an area where tourism plays a vital role.
"Tourism creates natural and sustainable people-to-people exchanges," the diplomat said, adding that travel allows citizens of both countries to directly experience each other's culture, history, cuisine, and way of life. These interactions, he stressed, help build respect and confidence, forming a foundation for broader bilateral cooperation.
Ambassador Knapper said that he has visited Phu Quoc three times. He described the island as a standout destination that reflects Viet Nam's ambition to develop world-class tourism while preserving its natural environment. He highlighted ongoing U.S. cooperation with Viet Nam in protecting marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and biodiversity, amid rapid development.
According to the Ambassador, American tourists are increasingly drawn to destinations that offer more than scenic beaches. Phu Quoc's strengths—such as swimming, diving, golf, and luxury beach resorts—align well with the preferences of U.S. travelers seeking high-quality leisure experiences. Viet Nam is now among the top 10 international tourism markets for American visitors.
Phu Quoc's selection as the host of APEC 2027 is expected to further enhance its global profile. Ambassador Knapper noted that previous APEC meetings in Ha Noi and Da Nang created strong momentum for tourism, investment, and innovation, and he believes Phu Quoc could follow a similar trajectory.
Improved air connectivity is another key factor boosting the island's competitiveness. The launch of a new airline and the expansion of existing flight networks, along with major upgrades to Phu Quoc International Airport and supporting infrastructure, will make the destination more accessible to international travelers, particularly those unfamiliar with Viet Nam.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Knapper said U.S. companies are interested in participating in Viet Nam's rapidly growing aviation and tourism sectors, viewing the country as one of the world's fastest-expanding aviation markets.
"With the right infrastructure, connectivity, and commitment to sustainability," he said, "Phu Quoc is well positioned to become a premier destination for American tourists and the wider international community," the Ambassador said.

Phu Quoc handles around 100 flights per day, nearly half of which are international services carrying thousands of passengers. With its mild climate, natural landscapes, and a system of world-class entertainment and resort facilities, Phu Quoc welcomed over 8.1 million visitors in 2025, including nearly 2 million international arrivals.
With 150 kilometers of coastline, Phu Quoc boasts some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, including Bai Dai, Ganh Dau and Bai Thom, along with a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve where visitors can immerse themselves in tropical forests, waterfalls, and rich flora and fauna — one of the core assets that sets Phu Quoc apart from other destinations in the region./.
