The An Giang provincial People's Council has approved an investment policy to build the urban metro line which is expected to minimize personal vehicles, traffic accidents and green house gas emission while promoting green urban development and sustainable tourism for Phu Quoc through 2030.

The metro line stretches 18 km with a designed speed of 70–100 km/h and total investment of nearly VND 9 trillion (over US$300 million) under a BOT contract by Phu Quoc Sun Company Limited.

Phase 1 of the metro line will run 18 km from Phu Quoc International Airport to the APEC Convention Center, including 1.3 km elevated, 14.3 km at-grade, and 2 km underground through the central area.

Along the route, six stations and one maintenance facility will be built. Each train will consist of 3–5 carriages, with each carriage over 34 meters long and a capacity of about 180 passengers. The trains will operate at a designed speed of 70–100 km/h.

Once completed, the project will help establish a modern public transport network serving both residents and tourists, while supporting the organization of the APEC 2027 Summit.

Phu Quoc island is the largest island in Viet Nam, located in the Gulf of Thailand and now designated as a special administrative zone. The island has been chosen as the venue for the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in 2027.

Major infrastructure works are underway as Phu Quoc gears up for hosting APEC 2027 including expansion of Phu Quoc international airport to accommodate 18 million passengers (up from 4 million), upgrading of port infrastructure is being upgraded so Phu Quoc can serve as a maritime gateway for the region, including accommodating large cruise ships and flagship "APEC Convention Centre, the 20-kilometer DT.975 provincial road linking Phu Quoc International Airport with DT.973 provincial road.

Scheduled for November 2027 in Phu Quoc, the APEC Economic Leaders' Week will gather around 12,000 participants, including senior leaders, government officials, and business representatives from 21 APEC economies./.
