Viet Nam has reduced the number of localities nationwide to 34 from previously 63 to expand development space, save budget for development investment and improve the efficiency of local administrations.
The names of 34 provinces and centrally-run cities are: Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen, Dien Bien, Lang Son, Son La, Phu Tho, Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Ha Noi Capital, Hai Phong City, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Hue City, Da Nang City, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho City and Ca Mau.
From July 1, 2025, the two-tier local administration system (provincial and communal administrations) is set to come into operation. The district-level administrations have been dissolved./.
