Of the figure, about 4,000 receive scholarships funded by the state budget. The rest are either self-funded or supported by other scholarship sources.

The most popular destinations for Vietnamese students are South Korea (43,300), Japan (36,300), Australia (33,000), the U.S. (31,300), Taiwan (China) (27,400), China (23,500), and Canada (17,100).

Deputy Minister of the MoET Nguyen Van Phuc said, Viet Nam is one of the countries with a growing number of students studying abroad, adding that it is not only an opportunity for learners to access global knowledge, but also contributes positively to international integration and the development of high-quality human resources.

On the other hand, in the recent academic year, Viet Nam received nearly 600 international students, mainly from Laos, Cambodia, Russia, China, and others. The total number of foreign students in Viet Nam is around 15,000.

Viet Nam leads ASEAN countries in the number of students studying in the U.S., a report released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) showed.

The number of Vietnamese students at U.S. universities and colleges continues to grow, reaching 22,066 students in academic year 2023–2024.

Viet Nam also leads ASEAN in sending students abroad for education, according to Cambodian newswire SBM News.

The 2024 Key Trends in Southeast Asia report by Acumen, an international education consultant, showed that more than 350,000 students from Southeast Asia were studying abroad in 2022, making it the third largest region globally for outbound student mobility after China and India.

Within the region, Viet Nam had by far the largest number of outbound students with 132,000./.
