Viet Nam, India to inject new momentum to bilateral ties

VGP - General Secretary and President To Lam’s state visit to India from May 5-7 will create new momentum and shape a framework to elevate Viet Nam–India relations to a new level in the next phase, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the visit, the Deputy Foreign Minister described the trip as a major diplomatic event of special significance as it is the first visit by the top Vietnamese Party and State leader and takes place on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Viet Nam-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The visit demonstrates Viet Nam's high regard for its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with India and the broader South Asian region. It also offers a meaningful opportunity for both countries to review a decade of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework and consolidate their multifaceted cooperation.

The primary objective is to create a "qualitative leap" in the relationship, ensuring it is commensurate with the potential and rising positions of both nations on the global stage. This alignment is particularly focused on long-term national aspirations: Viet Nam's goal to become a developed country by 2045 and India's vision for 2047.

Bilateral relations have already seen robust growth in recent years. The two-way trade reaches approximately US$15-16 billion annually, making India among Viet Nam's top 10 trade partners.

The defense and security sector saw high levels of mutual trust with deepened collaboration in joint training and capacity building. Leaders of the two countries are expected to discuss breakthroughs in innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation, satellite data, and clean energy.

The visit stands as testament to Viet Nam's consistent pursuance of a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and the diversification of external ties. Both Viet Nam and India share a common vision of an international rule-based order.

The visit also follows a period of intense regional diplomacy for Viet Nam, including the recent official visit of Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to Ha Noi, which further emphasized Viet Nam's strategic role in building a "stronger and more prosperous" region.

During his stay in New Delhi and Mumbai, General Secretary and President To Lam will engage in a diverse agenda, including financial and sci-tech forums. These interactions are expected to deliver concrete benefits to citizens and businesses alike while contributing to regional peace, stability, and sustainable development.

Vietnamese Ambassador to India Nguyen Thanh Hai noted the visit will provide the "important impetus" needed to ensure the partnership remains a cornerstone of both nations' foreign policies in the new era.

According to the diplomat, the two countries prioritize strengthening cooperation in innovation, so as to achieve the goal of making Viet Nam a developed country by 2045 and India a developed country by 2047.

In addition, both sides will continue to boost cooperation in the economic, trade, and investment pillars, and promote people-to-people exchanges in culture, education, and tourism./.
