On the occasion of the Universal Health Coverage Day (December 12), WHO Representative in Viet Nam Dr Angela Pratt said the above move would make a concrete difference to people's health and lives, improving health and expanding access to essential health services in line with the core principles of UHC.
The new Law on Disease Prevention shifts the focus from treatment to prevention, addressing infectious and noncommunicable diseases (NCD), mental health, nutrition and other key issues. It outlines essential tasks for Government agencies to keep communities healthy and reduce the disease burden.
The new Population Law for Sustainable Development responds to critical demographic trends, including population aging, declining fertility and sex ratio imbalance. It aims to improve quality of life and support Viet Nam's long-term socio-economic development.
The National Target Programme on Health Care, Population and Development (2026-2035) strengthens grassroots health care, promotes disease prevention and prioritizes vulnerable populations. This programme is key to building an equitable and resilient health system.
WHO Representative in Viet Nam Dr Angela Pratt commended the Government for its commitment to improving the health of Viet Nam's 100 million people.
Viet Nam has already dramatically improved access to health care, for example, expanding social health insurance to cover 95 percent of people. Viet Nam has taken further steps to prioritize prevention, equity and sustainability. These initiatives align with national health strategies and global commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The measures reinforce Viet Nam's commitment to universal health coverage, population well-being and resilient health systems, in line with SDG targets.
"The three measures adopted by the National Assembly this week will contribute to a healthier population, and communities that are more resilient, productive and prosperous," said Dr Pratt.
"Of course, the Government can continue to count on the support of WHO and health partners in helping ensure these important changes make a measurable difference in the lives of ordinary people in every corner of Viet Nam," Dr Pratt finalized./.
