WHO commends Viet Nam’s efforts and achievements in healthcare
VGP - The World Health Organization (WHO) hails the vision of Viet Nam’s leadership in developing a roadmap to gradually reduce the healthcare cost burden on the people, moving toward nationwide free hospital care in the 2030-2035 period.

WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Saia Ma'u Piukala made the above statement during his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long in Ha Noi on August 25.
He hailed the nation's adoption of the amended Law on Special Consumption Tax last June, which increases taxes on alcohol, beer, tobacco, and high-sugar beverages, as well as bans e-cigarettes, which is of great significance in protecting the health of young people.
He further noted that the awarding of the World No Tobacco Day Awards to the Minister of Health of Viet Nam is clear evidence of Viet Nam's strong commitment in this field.
The WHO stands ready to provide technical support to help improve the health of the Vietnamese people, noted the official, affirming that the WHO will continue to support Viet Nam in the time ahead.
Le, for his part, welcomed Piukala on his visit to Viet Nam on the occasion of the 80th National Day anniversary, adding that the visit not only reflects the close ties between WHO and Viet Nam but also demonstrates the fruitful cooperation between the two sides.
The host spoke highly of the acknowledgment by the WHO for the Vietnamese Government's efforts and achievements in the healthcare sector.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the vision of providing free hospital care and free regular health check-ups for the people is a strong commitment, demonstrating the determination of the Party and Government of Viet Nam to improve the quality of life for its citizens.
He expressed deep appreciation for WHO's support and companionship on this journey and thanked WHO for its assistance to Viet Nam, including valuable input and consultation in the process of formulating health policies, as well as support for many specific programs and projects.
Greater focus will be placed on disease prevention—ensuring that healthcare is not only about treating illness after it occurs, but about improving overall health and reducing the number of people requiring hospital treatment, noted Le.
The Deputy Prime Minister called for WHO's continued close cooperation in areas such as policy consultation, human resource training, health policy communication, and disease prevention and control.
He once again reaffirmed Viet Nam's active and responsible participation in the mission of the WHO, aimed at improving health for all people.
