The Viet Nam Red Cross Society launched a national donation campaign on August 13 to rally support for the Cuban people on the occasion of the Viet Nam – Cuba Friendship Year and the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The campaign was designed to run for 65 days until October 16, aiming to raise at least VND65 billion (about US$2.56 million) to help Cuba overcome difficulties and further strengthen the countries’ special friendship.
Over the past three days, organizers have mobilized more than VND125 billion (US$4.8 million), far beyond the initial target.
Th fund will be used to provide food, essential supplies, and long-term humanitarian assistance to help Cuba deal with the effects of the pandemic, natural disasters and the impact of blockade and embargo policies.
This initiative also sends a powerful message to the international community: “Viet Nam is always by Cuba’s side as Cuba has always been by Viet Nam’s side.”
Public engagement has been strong, with celebrities, businesses, and ordinary citizens making contributions and sharing proof of their donations on social media.
People nationwide can track the total donations in real time via https://thiennguyen.app/donate-target/1955184412459020288 or by downloading the Thien Nguyen (Charity) app from the App Store or Google Play. Publicly accessible statements of donations are also available on these platforms.
The 65-day campaign also features grassroots initiatives in schools, workplaces, and communities. Activities include letter-writing to Cuban children, charity events, and fundraising drives among union members, students, and workers. All contributions and donor lists are published transparently to ensure public trust.
The campaign underscores Viet Nam's enduring solidarity with Cuba—a relationship forged through shared struggles and strengthened by decades of mutual support.
Viet Nam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 2, 1960, making Cuba the first country in the Western Hemisphere to recognize the government of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (North Viet Nam at the time). During Viet Nam's resistance war, Cuba provided strong political support, material aid, and even sent construction workers and engineers to help rebuild./.
