More than 2.7 million students to begin new academic year tommorow

The opening ceremonies will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on September 5 across the country.

Each province and centrally-run city will designate a main venue for the ceremony, with the event to be presided over by local leaders.

In addition to the main venues, the Ministry of Education and Training will select a number of representative educational institutions from different education levels, school types and regions to participate directly in the nationwide program.

Other schools will join the event online or watch the ceremony on television, depending on local conditions.

The ministry has requested that schools organize the ceremonies in a formal, safe, practical and economical manner, while ensuring that the programs are appropriate to their actual circumstances.

The ceremonies should be concise and educationally meaningful, while creating a positive and memorable experience for students, teachers and the wider community.

Key priorities for 2026-2027 academic year

The Ministry of Education and Training identified student development, teachers' working conditions, school performance and the quality of educational staff as key indicators for assessing the outcomes of the 2026-2027 academic year.

Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said the ministry would continue to prioritize expanding access to equitable and quality education for all during the new school year, in line with one of the three core objectives set out in Resolution No. 71 on breakthroughs in education and training development.

"We need to ensure that everyone who wants to learn can access to education, regardless of whether he/she lives in a city, rural area or remote, disadvantaged region," he said.

The minister also emphasized the principle of placing people at the center of development and considering human development a key driver of progress.

Under this approach, educational success should not be assessed solely through students' academic results, but also through the quality of education and the extent to which students are able to develop within their learning environment.

Ensuring sufficient schools and classrooms to meet demand remains one of the major challenges in achieving equitable and quality education.

Another notable change in the 2026-2027 academic year is the restructuring of the school system, with a number of schools being merged into larger school clusters.

Following the mergers, the number of vice principals will also be reduced. Many former vice principals are expected to move into teaching positions as part of the restructuring plan.
