Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son had a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 11, within the framework of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-58).

As the meeting took place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations, Bui and Rubio affirmed that the two countries have made remarkable advancements across various fields over the past 30 years, and the comprehensive strategic partnership framework has become increasingly substantive and effective.

They discussed measures to further deepen bilateral relations through promoting visits and exchanges at all levels, especially at the high level, implementing high-level agreements and effectively carrying out existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

Both sides pledged to actively join hands in organizing activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the Viet Nam-U.S. diplomatic relations.

Bui called on the U.S. to assist Viet Nam in enhancing innovation, digital transformation, development of high-tech supply chains, and training high-quality human resources.

He appreciated the goodwill and cooperation of the U.S. in financing projects to overcome the consequences of war in Viet Nam.

Bui urged the U.S. to continue to play an active role in contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region.

Rubio, for his part, reiterated that the U.S. places importance on its relationship with Viet Nam, expressing his hope to foster stronger ties with Viet Nam across various fields, work together to address remaining issues, and continue supporting Viet Nam in overcoming the consequences of war, considering it a testament to mutual trust and a symbol of the growing bilateral relationship.

The U.S. backs ASEAN centrality and continues to step up collaboration within the framework of the ASEAN-U.S. comprehensive strategic partnership, affirmed the U.S. Secretary of State.

They underscored the importance of peace, security, stability, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea. Both sides emphasized the need to resolve disputes via peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)./.
