As of April 1, of 3.84 million mobile numbers subjected to information verification, 2.17 million had contacted telecoms firms to update their requested data, accounting for 56.49 percent. The rest of 1.67 million numbers had been locked.

Accordingly, mobile subscribers are unable to make calls or send messages. They have 15 days to verify personal information with mobile network operators. If the data is then not yet updated another 30 days after that, the numbers' contracts will be terminated on May 15.

The phone number verification process is one of many steps mapped out by a government project on national database development and digitization. Among many goals, the project targets to consolidate social stability and prevent the inappropriate use of SIM cards.

Viet Nam currently has 127 million mobile phone numbers in use, 96 percent of which belong to either Vinaphone, Viettel or MobiFone. /.
