VN strives to be a math power

VGP - Under a national math development program recently approved by the Government, Việt Nam will invest VND 651 billion from 2010 to 2020, mainly in maths research, application and lectures, to increase its ranking in the world to the 40th from the current 50-55.

delegation won medals
The program is to improve the quality and scale of training math talents at secondary schools.

The number of internationally announced math publications is expected to double the figure in 2010.

By 2020, Việt Nam will have a sufficient contingent of qualified math lecturers at universities and colleges and over 70% of them have PhD degree.

Math institutes and some major universities’ math faculties are expected to become regional math training and research centers by that year.

Việt Nam will build the Mathematics Academy to assist math research and training activities. The country is scheduled to host the Asian Mathematics Conference in 2017.

In July, Việt Nam grabbed one gold, four silver and one bronze medals at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 2010 in Kazakhstan, ranking the 11th in the medal tally. It has participated in 34 IMOs since 1974, pocketing 45 gold, 82 silver and 63 bronze medals.

Prof. Ngô Bảo Châu, Việt Nam’s young math professor famous for the Langlands’ fundamental lemma project, will receive the Fields prize on August 19 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in India.
