VN purchases guidelines of enhancing legal migration

VGP – Viet Nam has purchased the guidelines of enhancing legal migration, preventing illegal migration and human trafficking and protecting rights for migrants.

August 21, 2019 11:06 AM GMT+7

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 20 joined hands with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to organize a meeting on communicating the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) Agreement.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director General of the Viet Nam Consular Department Vu Viet Anh asserted that international cooperation in migration is an effective framework to address challenges of  migration, which will promote safe and order legal migration to protect rights and interests of migrants for peace, stability and prosperity in the world.

As Viet Nam has been one of first nations joining the GCM Agreement, it has manifested the nation’s strong commitments to enhancing common awareness and responsibilities to share and reach goals of migration for benefits for all related sides, said Chief of IOM Mission in Viet Nam David Knight.

Delegates at the meeting presented the migration situations of Overseas Vietnamese, the process of Viet Nam’s participation, negotiations and approval of the agreement and goals of the agreement.

They reviewed and evaluated policies and laws of Viet Nam in international migration, contributing to realizing the GCM Agreement synchronously and effectively, thus launching goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This is the first event held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to communicate the GCM Agreement nationwide.

Viet Nam approved the GCM Agreement in December 2018 and has actively made plans on realizing the Agreement.

The GCM is the first intergovernmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration.

In September 2016, the UN General Assembly decided, through the adoption of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, to develop a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The process to develop this global compact started in April 2017, with its text finalized on July 13 by UN member states.
