VN makes significant progress in gender equality

National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong confirmed this at a seminar on the five-year implementation of the Law on Gender Equality in Ha Noi on June 5.

Phong said Viet Nam is one of the countries which early approved the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). In 2006, the Law on Gender Equality was adopted, creating a comprehensive legal framework for gender equality and detailing the main goals and basic principles of gender equality.

However, many challenges still remain to be overcome, she said, it requires the nation to exert more effort in organizing the implementation of policies and finding effective measures to help women and girls equally enjoy the fruits of socio-economic development.

Chairwoman of the NA Committee for Social Affairs Truong Thi Mai said the five-year implementation of the Law on Gender Equality has received positive response from the whole political system. The Viet Nam NA and Government have incorporated gender equality goals and principles in many important laws.

Pratibha Mahta, UN Coordinator in Viet Nam, praised the country’s progress in gender equality and improvement of women’s juridical capacity.

She emphasized the need to get all relevant agencies involved in promoting gender equality, and bringing more opportunities to women.

Viet Nam is now one of the countries having the largest numbers of female NA deputies in the region and the world.

Two years after implementing the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the 2011-2020 period, some goals have been fulfilled.

Participants to the seminar also discussed advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and challenges to ensuring gender equality and proposed policies and solutions to promote gender equality in Viet Nam. VOV.
