VN, Hong Kong share experience of methadone-based drug rehabilitation

The two sides frankly talked of experience acquired by the Special Administrative Region for 36 years of implementing the Methadone Program.

The Vietnamese guests were also introduced to researches on the program’s efficiency in Hong Kong and some other countries.  

According to the host professors, it is necessary to build up a proper network of methadone-based consulting and treatment rooms; nurture a contingent of volunteers and practitioners; and improve the community’s awareness of evil influence of drugs. 

They also highlighted community-based health protecting programs. In Hong Kong, most of methadone facilities are situated in the communities, and methadone services must be combined with other healthcare ones.

Helping drug addicts to get sober and reducing HIV infection are the main guidelines of the Methadone Program, they asserted.

At present, in Hong Kong, over 70% of drug addicts have accessed to methadone-based treatment.
