Co-chairing the forum, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Trần Hồng Hà announced that delegates would focus on three major topics: (1) impacts of climate change: vulnerability and adaptation; (2) opportunities and challenges to low-carbon economies; and (3) ASEM cooperation on global-level efforts.

According to Mr. Hà, as a developing country, Việt Nam has vast opportunities to apply the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which is one of the “flexibility” mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol.

Việt Nam has 29 CDM projects which have been recognized by the CDM Executive Board (CDM EB) with the total disposal of 14.5 million tons of CO2 in the credit period. Việt Nam ranks 11th among countries which have biggest number of projects recognized by the CDM EB.

The ASEM climate forum is a step to concretize the Government’s general plan and action program on the Việt Nam-EU relationship by 2010 with a vision to 2015, especially in natural resources and environment. Under the plan, EU member states will share experience with and support Việt Nam in tackling climate change./.
