Vinh takes Olympic shooting final place
VGP – Her outstanding performance helped Trinh Thu Vinh earn a place in the finals of the women's 10m air pistol event at the Paris Olympics on July 27.
Competing against 44 rivals in the qualifier, Vinh showed her stable form from the beginning. Her accurate shots maintained her in the upper half of the ranking table.
After six 10-shot series, Vinh scored 578 points including 26 10-point shots to place No 4 and qualified for the finals.
She was below Veronika Major of Hungary (582 points), Oh Ye-jin of South Korea (582 points) and Manu Bahker of India (580 points).
Apart from the top three, Vinh will be against rivals from China, Turkey and South Korea in the finals on July 28 at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre.
Vinh is expected to bring home a medal from the Paris 2024. Further, she is potential to follow her senior teammate Hoang Xuan Vinh to step on the top podium of the 10m air pistol for one more time.
Xuan Vinh made history as the first Vietnamese athlete winning an Olympic gold at the Rio Games in 2016.
After taking her final spot, Thu Vinh was awarded US$1,000 by former national shooting team head coach Nguyen Thi Nhung.
Ealier, Nhung promised to present $1,000 for every shooter who could make top eight.
Thu Vinh will have her second event of 25m pistol on August 2. Her teammate Le Thi Mong Tuyen will compete in the women's 10m air rifle on July 28.
In rowing event, Vietnamese Pham Thi Hue finished fourth with a time of 8min 3.84sec in the fifth heat of the women's singles sculls.
She failed to directly qualify for the semi-finals but compete in the repechage round on July 28.
The repechage offers athletes who were knocked out in the early rounds a second chance to qualify for later matches.
In judo, Viet Nam's sole representative Hoang Thi Tinh was defeated 0-1 by Oumaima Bedioui of Tunisia in the first round match of the women's 48kg category.
It was a predicted result as Tinh placed No 86 in the world while Bedioui ranked No 38.
The 33rd Summer Olympics was declared open on July 26 by French President Emmanuel Macron under the rain.
Athletes were cheered by the crowd of 300,000 spectators along the Seine River while dancers took to the roofs of Paris, Lady Gaga sang a French cabaret song and Celine Dion performe from the Eiffel Tower in her first performance in two years.
It was the first time that an opening ceremony has taken place outside a stadium. More than 10,500 athletes compete at the Olympics, 100 years since Paris last staged the Games, with 329 gold medals up for grab.
The Vietnamese delegation takes part in the Games with 39 members including 16 athletes in 11 sports. They are expected to win medal from weightlifting, shooting and archery./.
