Vietnamese catfish as top most consumed seafood in US

VGP - Vietnamese tra and basa fish have jumped three rankings, from the 9th in 2010 to the 6th in 2011’s ten most consumed types of seafood in the US, announced the US National Fisheries Institute (NFI).

Vietnamese tra fish is one of ten most consumed types of seafood in the US

According to the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the US became Viet Nam’s second biggest tra importer in the first 8 months of this year with US$254 million, up 29.9% year on year.

The Vietnamese entered the list of top 10 most favored seafood in the US for the first time in 2009.

The 10 most consumed types of seafood in the US in 2011 include shrimp, tuna, Alaska Pollock, tilapia, tra and basa (pangasius), catfish, crab, cod fish and clams.

In 2011, an American consumed an average of 0.629 pound of basa and tra.
