Viet Nam, U.S. lift up ties to comprehensive strategic partnership
VGP - Viet Nam and the U.S. have decided to lift up their comprehensive partnership to comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
The decision was reached by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Nguyen Phu Trong and U.S. President Joe Biden at their summit meeting in Ha Noi on Sunday.
Viet Nam and the U.S. normalized relations in July 1995 and elevated the ties to comprehensive partnership in July 2013.
At the meeting, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong spoke highly of President Joe Biden's Viet Nam visit which takes place on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the two countries' comprehensive partnership.
Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong reiterated Viet Nam's consistent foreign policy and its "four nos" defense policy and highly valued the U.S. for supporting Viet Nam and ASEAN's stance on the East Sea issue.
He asked the U.S. to continue support and active contributions to peace, security, cooperation while ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight as well as the legitimate rights of countries in the East Sea.
The Party chief called for peaceful resolution of disputes, implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and early signing of an effective and efficient Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
President Biden spoke highly of Viet Nam's active role in many regional and global issues, including climate change, affirming his support for ASEAN centrality, and expressing his wish to cooperate with Viet Nam to contribute to ASEAN's solidarity and prosperity. He underlined the important position of the East Sea for international prosperity and stability.
The two leaders agreed that the important outcomes of their meeting and the Viet Nam visit by President Biden would constribute positively to the development of the bilateral ties in the new period, in the interest of the two peoples, for peace, stability and sustainable development.
Later the same day, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Joe Biden briefed reporters about the outcomes of their meeting./.
