Viet Nam to pilot E10 biofuel sales in three major cities
VGP - Viet Nam plans to pilot the sale of E10 biofuel—a blend containing 10 percent ethanol—in Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, and Hai Phong from August 1.
Vietnam has six ethanol production facilities with a total annual capacity of around 500,000 cubic metres, only two are currently operational, collectively capable of producing just 100,000 cubic metres per year.
This trial phase serves as a preparatory step toward a nationwide mandatory rollout scheduled for early 2026.
The Viet Nam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex) and Petrovietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL) will lead the pilot program.
Petrolimex plans to offer E10 at 36 retail stations in Ho Chi Minh City, while PVOIL will distribute the fuel at six locations—four in Ha Noi and two in Hai Phong.
E10 is widely recognized as engine-compatible, with studies showing it works well with most gasoline engines, including older vehicles.
Over 60 countries have already adopted E10, with mandates in place in the U.S. and Europe. In Asia, nations such as China and the Philippines have fully transitioned to E10 since 2018, prohibiting the retail sale of unblended fossil gasoline.
To ensure the successful rollout of E10, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) directed relevant agencies to implement supporting measures. These include ethanol price subsidies to ensure stable supply, the completion of technical standards, expanded public awareness campaigns, and the development of distribution networks—especially in rural, mountainous, and island regions./.
