Viet Nam to invest US$383 million in key laboratories, testing centers for strategic technologies till 2030
VGP - Viet Nam plans to invest approximately VND10 trillion (US$383.6 million) from now to 2030 in eight key laboratories and four testing centers serving for shared research infrastructure and strategic technologies.
The above information was announced by a representative of the Department of Science, Technology and Engineering under the Ministry of Science and Technology at a workshop held on August 20.
The planned investment would amount to VND500 billion (US$19.2 million) for each laboratory and VND1.5 trillion (US$57.53 million) for each testing center.
The new laboratory model, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027, will enable businesses to access research, testing and measurement capabilities to develop strategic technology products.
In addition to the laboratories, the four testing centers serving strategic technology products will support the process from research results to products and market.
A survey of 113 research and testing centers and laboratories conducted by the Department found that over a five-year period, these institutions published 5,508 academic papers but produced only 390 patents and utility solutions and signed 622 technology transfer contracts.
Earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung signed a Decision approving a master plan on the development of research centers, testing facilities and key laboratories serving strategic technologies.
Under the plan, by 2030, Viet Nam aims to upgrade, establish, and put into operation at least eight national key laboratories in the fields of digital technologies, next-generation mobile networks, robotics and automation, advanced biology and biomedicine, advanced energy and materials, cybersecurity and quantum technologies, marine and ocean sciences and geosciences, and aviation and aerospace.
At least four national research and testing centers for priority areas of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), biology and biomedicine, advanced materials, high-speed rail and urban rail will be formed.
From now to 2030, Viet Nam targets the mastery of at least 10 core technologies that directly support the development of strategic technology products and address major national challenges.
Each national research and testing center and national key laboratory will be required to establish and maintain close collaboration with at least one innovation ecosystem or cluster comprising research institutes, higher education institutions, enterprises, and state management agencies./.
