Viet Nam to consider abolishing district-level administration, merging several localities
VGP – The Politburo has requested the Party Committee of the Government to study the abolishment of district-level administration – one of the three administrative levels of Viet Nam’s local administration.
As prescribed by law, Viet Nam's local administration is organized at three levels: provincial, district and commune.
For district level, there were 705 district-level administrative units as of June 30, 2024, said the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Politburo also requested the Party Committee of the Government to figure out orientations to merge several provincial-level administrative units, according to the Conclusion No. 126-KL/TW dated February 14 of the Politburo and the Secretariat on continued rearrangement and streamlining of the political system's apparatus in 2025.
Under Article 110 of the 2013 Constitution, Viet Nam shall be divided into provinces and centrally run cities. Currently, there are 63 provinces and centrally run cities across the country.
The Party Committee of the Government was assigned to direct the Government Inspectorate and relevant agencies to promptly finalize a project to reorganize the inspection system; review, evaluate and reorganize Party organizations of State-owned groups, corporations and commercial banks.
The Politburo urge the Ministry of Public Security to coordinate with relevant agencies and localities to deploy the project to reorganize police system at three levels (ministerial, provincial and commune) instead of four levels (ministerial, provincial, district and commune)./.
