Viet Nam, Myanmar agree to transform defense-security cooperation into key pillar of bilateral ties
VGP – General Secretary and President of Viet Nam To Lam and Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing have agreed to transform defense and security cooperation into a key pillar of bilateral ties.
The agreement was reached during their summit meeting in Ha Noi on Saturday morning.
From this perspective, the two countries will expand cooperation in young officers training and exchanges, rescue and overcoming natural disaster consequences.
Both sides will also step up information exchange, coordination in combatting transnational, drug, human trafficking, high-tech crimes and online fraud.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment not to allow any individuals and organizations to use one country's territory against the other.
General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Viet Nam stands ready to share experience in advancing national development, ensuring economic security, promoting sustainable development and international integration.
President Min Aung Hlaing, who is on a three-day official visit to Viet Nam, promised to facilitate Viet Nam's investment in his country while calling on both sides to expand investment in such fields like high-tech agriculture, food processing, telecommunication and information technology, digital transformation, energy, and transport infrastructure development.
On multilateral cooperation, the two leaders agreed to enhance exchanges at regional and international mechanisms, including those within ASEAN and Mekong subregion cooperation frameworks.
President Min Aung Hlaing appreciated Viet Nam's consistent support for Myanmar throughout its national development course as well ast at ASEAN, regional and international forums.
Both sides underscored the importance of ensuring peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, settling differences and disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).
The two sides agreed to beef up exchanges and experience sharing in the sectors of strategic importance to the region, such as transport infrastructure connectivity in the Mekong subregion, sustainable management and use of water resources.
The two leaders agreed to instruct relevant agencies from both countries to coordinate closely to help Myanmar successful undertake its role as the Chair of the upcoming ACMECS Summit in Viet Nam.
They also agreed to direct ministries and agencies to actively implement the common perceptions reached during the official visit to Viet Nam by President Min Aung Hlaing in a bid to further deepen the comprehensive partnership in an substantive and effective manner between the two countries, thus bringing practical benefits to the peoples of the two nations, and positively contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in Southeast Asia and the region.
President Min Aung Hlaing took the occasion to invite General Secretary and President To Lam and his Spouse to visit Myanmar in 2027 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Viet Nam-Myanmar comprehensie parntership./.
