Viet Nam leads regional fencing championship with eight golds

VGP — Viet Nam topped the medal tally of the Southeast Asian Fencing Federation Championship's elite category on December 8 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Vietnamese women's epee team take the top podium of the Southeast Asian Fencing Federation Championship in Malaysia on January 8.

After four days of competitions, the Vietnamese athletes grabbed eight golds out of 12 available at the event.

In the last day on January 8, Viet Nam advanced to three finals and triumphed twice.

Vu Thanh An and his three teammates defeated Thailand in the men's team sabre.

It was An's second gold after he won the individual event on January 6.

The women's team epee beat the Philippines in the final for the second gold of the day.

The men's foil however could take a silver, losing to the hosts who received strong support of local fans.

Earlier, Viet Nam claimed golds in the men's individual foil by Nguyen Minh Quang; women's individual sabre by Phung Thi Khanh Linh; women's team sabre; women's team foil and men's team epee.

Philippines took two golds, two silvers and three bronzes to place second in the ranking.

Malaysia bagged one gold, one silver and seven bronzes to rank third.

The tournament will continue on January 9 with competitions for junior athletes.

It will wrap up on January 14./.
