Viet Nam debuts Engineering Unit No.2 joining UN peacekeeping mission
VGP - A ceremony was held in Ha Noi on December 27 to introduce Viet Nam’s Engineering Unit Rotation No.2 participating in the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Abyei (UNISFA).
Deputy Minister of Defense Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet, representatives of the UN and international organizations in Viet Nam and Ambassadors attended the event.
Viet Nam's Engineering Unit Rotation No.2, made up of 203 officers, including 22 females, was established in 2014 to be deployed to a suitable peacekeeping mission when requested by the UN.
Since June 2014, the Viet Nam People's Army has sent 516 officers and regular soldiers to UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, the Abyei Area, and the UN headquarters.
In 2020, four officers of the Viet Nam Department of Peacekeeping Operations passed tests to be recruited by the UN, including three working for the UN Department of Peace Operations at the UN headquarters and one for the mission in the Central African Republic.
In May 2022, the first engineering unit of Viet Nam with 184 people departed for the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
