Viet Nam calls for decisive actions towards total elimination of nuclear weapons

Speaking at the UN General Assembly's recent high-level meeting commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Ambassador Do, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations and President of the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) urged the international community to take bold and concrete steps to achieve the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
Do called on all countries to strengthen disarmament and non-proliferation mechanisms, demonstrate the highest level of responsibility and political will, and work together to reduce and ultimately eliminate these weapons of mass destruction.
The ambassador highlighted Viet Nam's consistent position as a member of the NPT, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), emphasizing the importance of adherence to international law and the UN Charter.
He also underlined ASEAN's ongoing efforts to implement the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), while voicing strong support for initiatives addressing the humanitarian and environmental impacts of nuclear weapons testing and use.
In his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the world is "sleepwalking" into a new nuclear arms race.
He reiterated that disarmament is the foundation of peace and cannot be delayed until so-called "right" conditions are met, urging nuclear-armed states to return to dialogue, ratify the CTBT, and honor their obligations under the NPT./.
