The regular meeting of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Board of Governors opened in Vienna, Austria on 5 June, with the participation of representatives of 35 council member countries, along with several IAEA Member States and international organizations as observers.

In his opening remarks, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized that the IAEA always made efforts and timely supports the Member States within the scope of its competence.

Notably, the United Nations Security Council backs five principles proposed by the IAEA to ensure the security and safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien, Governor-Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the IAEA led the Vietnamese delegation, including representatives of specialized units under the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He highlighted the need to balance the three pillars of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), thereby elevating the rights of countries to use nuclear energy and technology for peaceful purposes in accordance with international law and NPT obligations.

Underlining Viet Nam's efforts and achievements in nuclear safeguards, he affirmed that the country always supports IAEA's role and values technical cooperation programs, particularly ongoing ones between Viet Nam and the IAEA.

He suggested the IAEA continue enhancing support for and technical cooperation with Viet Nam in this field.

Viet Nam was elected as a member of the IAEA Board of Governors in September 2021 for the 2021-2023 term. The agency currently consists of 35 members.

The IAEA Board of Governors holds four sessions annually in March, June, September, and November, with the annual IAEA General Conference in September./.
